Dear friends, after one year of (more or less) active blogging, I decided that I am stopping this project tonight. It was quite a lot of fun and I got great feedback. But in the meanwhile there are so many new projects, collaborations and exciting things going on that I simply don't have the time to keep this blog regularly updated. And I guess it is much better to spend my time creating new stuff than just documenting the past.

If you want to stay updated about new projects and photo works, then please contact me via facebook or just check my website from time to time.

i have just released a new zine at kaugummi books - and unfortunately the first edition was already sold out before i could post it here on my blog (but please stay tuned ... i hope there will be a second edition).

"The zine is called PHOBOS and mainly inspired by the same-named personification of terror in the Greek mythology. PHOBOS was the son of war god Ares and he accompanied his father into battle, spreading panic fear among the enemies. The works in the zine range from the skulls of Celtic warriors, to medieval kings and the weaponary of trench warfare."

I am very glad to announce that my works will be presented at the renowned Rencontres d'Arles "Voies Off" photography festival 2010.

My works will be presented twice during the festival.

- “For Intérieur” slideshow at the closing night of the festival, curated by Professor Michel Poivert from the Sorbonne University . (“For Intérieur” projection show / date: July 10, 10.30 p.m. / place: Cour de l’Archevêché, place de la République, Arles / free entry)

- “Identity Lab” group show curated by Christian Gattinoni, chief-editor of lacritique.org. Beside my humble self, the amazing Toronto based film-maker and photographer Bruce LaBruce will also be part of this show! (“Identity Lab” exhibition / date: July 3 - 10, open daily 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. / place: La Vitrine, rue Jouvène & L’Ecole Taurine, 66 rue du 4 septembre)

CRYSTAL METH MYTHS

Die Gruppenausstellung Crystal Meth Myths zeigt aktuelle Arbeiten von Alexander Binder (Stuttgart), Hannes Müller-Stucki (Berlin) und Bora Tanay (Istanbul), die auch, aber nicht ausschließlich unter dem Einsatz digitaler Medien entstanden sind.

Im Zeitalter von „Hyper Locality“ und „Augmented Reality“ bestimmen technische Gadgets unseren Alltag und entscheiden über die kollektive und subjektive Wahrnehmung von Gegenständen und Ereignissen. Über die reale Welt haben sich längst mehrere digitale Informationsebenen gelegt, die nur anhand vordefinierter Nutzerprofile bestimmter Communitys entschlüsselt werden können. Die sogenannte Synthetisierung des Alltags und der Gesellschaft hat das Bedürfnis nach einem übergeordneten sinnstiftenden Inhalt geschaffen, der über die subjektive formale Wahrnehmung hinausgeht – eine neue Sehnsucht nach Mystik, Einkehr, innerem Erleben des Menschen mit dem Ziel unmittelbaren Einswerdens mit einem anderen, oft transzendenten Sein: mit einem objektiven Seinsgrund, mit der Geschichte, mit Gott, mit der Welt, mit dem Selbst usw. – je nach Ausgangspunkt.

Binder, Müller-Stucki und Tanay erschaffen artifizielle Erlebnisse, deren Abstraktion einen vordergründigen Objektivismus schafft. Geometrische Strukturen und konkrete Körper trennen sich klar von Hintergrund und Umfeld ab. Die Fotografien, Illustrationen, Objekte und Installationen bestechen durch eine „hippe“ Ästhetik, ohne jedoch aufgesetzt zu wirken und bedienen sich aus dem aktuellen Zeichenschatz der Popkultur. Dabei werden dennoch zahlreiche Querverweise aus der Kunstgeschichte hergestellt und Links aus den Bilddatenbanken der sogenannten transformierten Generation – von analog nach digital – gesetzt. Die Nähe zur Ästhetik des Computerspiel-Designs mag dabei nicht zufällig wirken.

Die Konstruktionen der Künstler erscheinen wie anorganische Formulierungen, die verstörend und befremdlich die Aufmerksamkeit des Rezipienten einforden, ohne Antworten zu liefern. Isoliert, in distanzierter Haltung zum Betrachter, wird ein unilateraler Zugang zu den Inhalten vorausgesetzt, der den vermeintlich künstlichen Charakter der Arbeiten verstärkt. Binder, Müller-Stucki und Tanay machen sich dabei digitale Technologien zunutze, versklaven sie für ihre Zwecke, aber persiflieren gleichzeitig durch die situative Absurdität der erzeugten Bilder die Technisierung und stellen damit ihre künstlerische Allmacht in Frage. In der Mehrdimensionalität der Arbeiten stecken Analyse und Synthese, Kontrolle und Kontrollverlust, Beschleunigung und Entschleunigung, Organik und Anorganik, Trend und Gegentrend.

Im Rahmen der Ausstellung findet am 10.06.2010 um 19.00 Uhr ein Vortrag des bulgarischen Künstlers Iassen Markov unter dem Thema „Photoshop Overkill“ statt.

“0333-5558-8989” is the serial number of my old flatbed scanner.

The name of this photo series derives from the fact that no camera has been used to create the images. All the objects have just been placed directly on the scanner. Therefore it could be described as a modern interpretation of Man Ray’s photograms.

Nathan Abels invited me to be part of his show at RULE gallery in Denver/Colorado and I am already looking forward to the exhibition. The works in “Natural Causes” explore the landscape and its inhabitants with each image depicting a visual pause in an ongoing event. What I am capturing in these paused moments is a sense of “straining at particles of light in the midst of great darkness.” (Keats). The people at "Revel in New York" have already featured some of my works a few days ago.

Yesterday I received some copies of the latest issue of Swiss "kinki magazine" with a 12 page feature of my "Traum" works. The production people at kinki did a great job - the rainbow colors are vibrant and lively, they achieved strong bw-contrasts and the matte paper looks really good. A fine piece of Swiss craftsmanship.

I have had some enquiries relating to the future availability of the "Black Goat" which have led me to consider a larger second edition of the title at some point down the line. This would most likely be a standard (possibly jewel cased) release with simplified artwork etc etc. If there are any small labels who would be interested in getting involved with this, get in touch."

Edvard Munch und das Unheimliche

Last week I went to Vienna for some days to visit the Edvard Munch exhibition at the Leopold Museum. To be honest: It was the best exhibition I've seen so far. The curator Michael Fuhr and director Rudolf Leopold did a truly amazing job. They showed 37 works of Munch and I guess over 200 works in total. There was a whole room with paintings and drawings of James Ensor, they showed Alfred Kubin, Goya, Schiele, Böcklin and so many other great artists (also my nearly forgotten, personal hero from Norway - Theodor Kittelsen) that I needed several hours to look at all the works. I mean, normally I tend to be a depressive pessimist - but this day at 'Edvard Munch und das Unheimliche' was really a highlight. The sad news for all of you: Sunday (January 17) was the last day of the exhibition, but there's at least an exhibition catalogue available (published by Brandstätter) and a 360 degree view of the Munch room (http://www.leopoldmuseum.org/munch.html).
